Slavko Vinčić will make history on July 19. The 46-year-old Slovenian will become the first referee from his country to take charge of a FIFA World Cup final. FIFA’s chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina personally informed him of the appointment. Vinčić called it an “incredible honour” and said he was left “shaking” when he heard the news. His selection is being framed by FIFA as a reward for consistent performances throughout the tournament. But his history with both finalists, Argentina and Spain, has made this appointment one of the most talked-about referee choices in recent World Cup history.

Who Is Slavko Vinčić And Why Was He Chosen?

    What Is Vinčić’s Refereeing Background

Vinčić was born on November 25, 1979, in Maribor, Slovenia, which was then part of Yugoslavia. He is an engineer by training with a background in telecommunications. He began refereeing professionally in Slovenia’s top division in 2007 and became a FIFA-listed official in 2010. He has worked more than 500 professional matches, with about 50 of them in the Champions League. He is one of the referees UEFA trusts with its biggest nights.

Why Did FIFA Select Him For The Final

Collina confirmed that the choice was based primarily on Vinčić’s displays across the 2026 tournament. Vinčić has already overseen three fixtures at this World Cup. He refereed Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Morocco and Jordan’s 2-1 win over Algeria in the group stage, as well as Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador in the round of 32. Collina also said: “Nobody can question the integrity of the FIFA World Cup match officials”. FIFA also continued a long-standing pattern: for ten straight World Cups since 1990, European referees have been chosen for finals played outside Europe.

What Big Matches Has Vinčić Already Officiated

Has He Handled Finals Of This Magnitude Before

Vinčić has a strong record in major European finals. He officiated the 2022 UEFA Europa League final between Eintracht Frankfurt and Rangers. Two years later, he took charge of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final at Wembley, where Real Madrid beat Borussia Dortmund 2-0. He is one of only two Slovenians to have officiated a Champions League final, after Damir Skomina in 2019.

How Much European Experience Does He Carry

His European experience is extensive. He has officiated a total of 72 Champions League and Europa League matches, including knockout fixtures and finals. He also took charge of games at UEFA EURO 2020 and UEFA EURO 2024. Last year he refereed games at the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in the United States. This is his second World Cup; he took charge of two games during the 2022 tournament in Qatar.

What Has Vinčić Done At The 2026 World Cup So Far

Which Matches Has He Refereed In This Tournament

Vinčić has refereed three matches at this World Cup before the final. In the group stage, he oversaw Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Morocco and Jordan’s 2-1 win over Algeria. His most recent assignment was the round-of-32 match between Mexico and Ecuador on July 1. The final will be his fourth match of the tournament.

How Strict Has He Been With Cards

In his three games so far at the 2026 World Cup, Vinčić has shown seven yellow cards and one red card, and has awarded no penalty kicks. The red card came in the Mexico-Ecuador round-of-32 match, where he sent off Ecuador’s Piero Hincapié after a video review. The red card was for breaching FIFA’s newly enforced conduct rules by covering his mouth during a confrontation with Mexico’s Santiago Giménez. The rule is popularly known as the “Vinícius-Prestianni law”.

Why Does His History With Argentina Raise Eyebrows

What Happened The Last Time He Refereed Argentina

Vinčić’s only previous Argentina match carries significant weight. He was the referee when Argentina lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It was one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, ending Argentina’s 36-match unbeaten run. In that match, he awarded Argentina a penalty in the 8th minute, which Lionel Messi converted. He also handed out six yellow cards to Saudi Arabian players throughout the match. Argentina eventually recovered from that defeat to win the tournament. But the memory of that shock loss still lingers for Argentine fans.

Does This History Mean Anything For Sunday’s Final

The history is an interesting footnote but has no bearing on officiating quality. Argentina fans might find it a nervous coincidence, given how the 2022 story ended in triumph. Vinčić has also handled Argentina matches fairly. In the 2022 match, his performance was largely uncontroversial and the penalty he awarded was fair. The appointment is a reward for his tournament form, not a comment on his history with either finalist.

How Has Vinčić Performed Against Spain Previously

What Is His Record Refereeing Spain Matches

Vinčić has officiated Spain five times before the final, and Spain have never lost with him in charge. His record with Spain is three wins and two draws. The run began on June 7, 2017, with a 2-2 friendly draw against Colombia. It continued with a 0-0 draw against Sweden at Euro 2020. More recently, he officiated Spain’s 2-1 win over Italy in the 2023 Nations League semi-finals. He also took charge of Spain’s 1-0 win over Italy at Euro 2024 and their 2-1 semi-final win over France in the same tournament. With Spain’s victory in the final, his record now stands at six matches without defeat.

Does This Give Spain A Psychological Edge

This statistic is trivia rather than a meaningful predictor. Officiating history has no direct bearing on a team’s on-field performance. But it is a narrative that has been widely discussed before kickoff. It is also worth noting that Vinčić has only refereed one Argentina match, and it ended in defeat. These coincidences have made his appointment a talking point among fans and media.

Who Else Is Part Of The Final’s Officiating Team

Who Are The Assistant Referees For The Final

Vinčić will be assisted by his long-time Slovenian colleagues, Tomaž Klančnik and Andraž Kovačič. They have worked together throughout their careers and Vinčić described them as “really good friends, a good team”. He also said: “Without them, without Tomaž and Andraž, this is not possible”.

Who Are The Fourth Official And Reserve Assistant

The final’s officiating team includes Jordan’s Adham Makhadmeh as the fourth official and Mohammad Al-Kalaf as the reserve assistant referee. This completes the officiating crew for the final.

Why Does A European Referee Fit This Final’s Pattern

Is There A Historical Pattern Behind This Choice

For ten straight World Cups since 1990, European referees have been chosen for finals played outside Europe. Vinčić follows Poland’s Szymon Marciniak, who refereed the 2022 final. This is the second straight World Cup final where Argentina, now the defending champion, will have a European referee to face a European opponent.

How Does This Compare To The Last World Cup Final

Marciniak awarded a penalty to each team in the thrilling 3-3 draw between Argentina and France in Qatar in 2022. He then showed a yellow card to Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez for unsporting conduct during the penalty shootout. Vinčić now steps into that lineage of respected European officials handling the sport’s biggest match.

    Conclusion

Slavko Vinčić arrives at the World Cup final on merit. He is a 46-year-old Slovenian with more than 500 professional matches to his name, including the 2022 Europa League final and the 2024 Champions League final. He has officiated three matches at this World Cup, showing seven yellow cards and one red card, with no penalties awarded.

His appointment makes him the first Slovenian to referee a World Cup final and the 23rd overall in history. The final at New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19 will be the biggest test of his career. The narratives around his history with both finalists are intriguing, but they remain just stories. On the pitch, his performance will be judged by the decisions he makes in the biggest game in football.
